Subject:Requested Post
Time:3:57 pm.
Mood: contemplative.
Ted said: "How are the two of you handling Violet's spiritual upbringing? Do you go to a church or prescribe to a particular general belief system? If not, what are you going to tell her when she starts asking why she doesn't get to go to the same neat-sounding church retreats and summer camps that other kids do?"

Neither of us are religious people. Therefore, religion isn't a prerequisite for participation in our family's day to day life, so we haven't taught Bit anything about it at all. Even if we did talk to her about it, because we've never been to church or anything, there would be no frame of reference for it.

Basically, we're going to wait to see if she expresses interest in religion. We'll tell her that there are lots of different beliefs, and none of them are completely right or wrong. If she wants to go to a church when she's older, we'll go with her and talk about what she thinks of it. I'm not particularly down on any religion; they all seem to have good points and bad points, which we'll be glad to discuss with her.

The main thing I want her to learn is that there is no correct religion. All religions (including Atheism, which I consider to be a religion) are valid and deserving of respect.

Subject:Make me post something
Time:1:05 pm.
Mood: curious.
Everyone has things they blog about. Everyone has things they don't blog about. Challenge me out of my comfort zone by telling me something I don't blog about, but you'd like to hear about, and I'll write a post about it. Ask for anything: latest movie watched, last book read, political leanings, favorite type of underwear, etc. Repost in your own journal so that we can all learn more about each other.

Time:11:13 am.
Mood: accomplished.
We painted the bedroom this weekend. It's light blue with a medium brown accent wall. The effect is that the blue lightens the room, but the brown keeps you grounded. It was a lot of work, but it was worth it to improve our home.

Time:3:15 pm.
Mood: cheerful.
Tagged by Ted.
Directions: Comment to this post and I will give you 5 subjects/things I associate you with. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given.

Ted's 5 Things for Me

Action packed!
Catch phrase of a recurring roleplaying character named Jack Fidian. So far, he's been a werewolf, a superhero, a NERO adventurer, an Imperial Guardsman, and a spaceship captain. Jack is loud, passionate and impetuous. He's lots of fun to play.

...lies in the sunken city of R'lyeh, not dead but dreaming. I've run and played in several games involving the Tentacled One. One of them is running now.

KY Jelly
My mom gave me my first tube of this stuff. I don't think I need to say more than that.

The Caravacci Brothers
Another set of recurring roleplaying characters. Franky and Tony Caravachi (Ted misspelled it) are gangsters regardless of the game they're in. When they're PCs, they're tons of fun. When they're NPCs, they die quickly.

riding saddle
I'm drawing a blank on this one.

IP Paralegal assisting a partner at a downtown patent law firm

10. Did you play a team sport?
Goodness no.

15. Did you get suspended or expelled?

16. Can you sing the fight song?

No. She dumped me during my first year of college. I later found out she started dating a then-friend of mine. I don’t talk to him, either.

25. Are you planning on going to your next reunion?

26. Do you still talk to people from school?

29. What are/were your school's colors?
Burgundy and gold.

30. Did you ever TP anyone's house?
No. That’s stupid.

Subject:Birthday Party
Time:3:23 pm.
Mood: content.
Bit's 2nd birthday party was Sunday. The grandparents came over, we ate a delicious homemade pumpkin roll made by Christine (thanks, Honey!), and Bit was showered with loot (doll house + accessories, lots of clothes and books). Great fun was had by all. Bit was sick (she's had a cough and runny nose for a few days), but she still had a good time.

After the grandparents went home, we went to the Dulles Town Center so Christine could return some pants and we could check out the Gymboree sale. Gymboree was an overcrowded madhouse. They also didn't have anything good in Bit's size. Not doing that again. After we fought our way out of Gymboree, Bit and Christine rode the train that goes around the inside of the mall. I got to ride it with her last time, so I knew they were going to enjoy it, and they did. Then we went to dinner at Pizzeria Uno, where Bit ate approximately one truckload of mac n' cheese with a grownup fork. She was sooooo tired by the end of the day, she passed out in the car and went to bed an hour early.

It was a good Sunday.

Subject:Ren Fest Trip!
Time:9:10 am.
Mood: happy.
Last Sunday, Oct. 19, we went to the last day of the Virginia Renaissance Festival. We ate faire food, saw all the people in garb, watched a joust, and had a lot of fun.

Bit was super cute in her Pirate Princess outfit. She was so cute, in fact, that Bob Fett (or possibly some guy in a Boba Fett costume; hard to tell with the mask and voice enhancer) asked if his female companion could take her picture.

Christine and I went to the vow renewal ceremony officiated by Cardinal Vice, which was quite romantic, even though it was cut short by a certain restless two-year-old. Nevertheless, a good time was had by all, and I was inspired by Super and Autumn's garb to dress up next year, hopefully with a fancy hat.

Pics behind the cutCollapse )

Subject:Pepsi ad is offensive... or is it?
Time:9:08 am.
Mood: awake.

This ad was referred to on Feministe

The boy in the ad is trading a can of Pepsi for the right to resuscitate a woman.  Though, by the looks on the boy's and lifeguard's faces, he's hardly thinking of saving her life.  This ad suggests that a woman's sexual freedom, and possibly her very life, are commodities to be traded for the price of a can of soda.  WTF???

I sent an email to Pepsi complaining that this ad is sexist and demeaning to women and urging them to take it down.  Here's Pepsi's response:

Dear Nassir,

Thanks for taking the time to contact us.

I want to assure you that there's absolutely no truth to the posting you may have seen on the internet. After investigating this matter further, we learned that an advertising agency developed this print ad on "speculation" and it inadvertently made its way to the internet.

Please know that we would never use this type of imagery to sell our products. We are not using this image now, nor do we have any plans to use it in the future.

Thanks again for taking the time to bring this to our attention. We’re sincerely sorry that this has upset you and we're grateful to have had the opportunity to set the record straight.

So, Pepsi says they never ran this one.

But... according to Coloribus, an advertising archive, the ad is part of the "Pepsi Exchange" campaign created by CLM BBDO and actually did may have run in France.  However, I was unable to find the ad on CLM BBDO's website.

So... who's telling the truth here?  Did Pepsi France run it but Pepsi America didn't?  Did Pepsi get screwed by overzealous employees of CLM BBDO who were trying to get an award for their "edgy" ad?  I've never actually seen this ad on a billboard or the side of a bus or anything, so I truthfully don't know what's going on here.
